Economic Development Forum

Welcome to the City’s Economic Development Forum! On November 3, 2014, the Council held a Community Workshop to hear the Community’s Economic Development suggestions and ideas concerning Downtown Brisbane and Crocker Industrial Park. Minutes from the workshop can be found here towards the bottom of the page: http://brisbaneca.org/city-council/2014-11-03. Part of the workshop entailed sharing with the Council the ideas that were submitted on this forum.

At this time, the forum is still open if you’d like to submit an idea you don’t already see listed by one of your fellow community members. If you have a picture of somewhere you visited that you think would work in town, please either submit it via the City’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/brisbane94005) or e-mail it to Caroline at ccheung@ci.brisbane.ca.us. As they say, a picture is worth 1,000 words. Thank you for your participation and feedback!

  1. How do you promote environment friendly construction in Brisbane, to reduce global warming.

The city should provide fast track approval for environment friendly projects. It does not cost anything to the city. The rules should be approved by the city and the staff directed to act on these rules on fast track system.

    • Cameras at Visitation and Mariposa

I have noticed a marked increase in neighbors behaving badly at that intersection.

People making left turn over the double yellow line to pull into a parking space in front of Julie's Deli. I counted 8 in one hour last week during the lunch hour!

Although the city changed the sidewalk on the cross street by extending them into the street to stop people from making a U-turn, it does not deter everyone...now they make five point turns to make the turn.

A camera in that location would stop the people like Leila from making Visitation a drag strip when…

      • Encourage a Brisbane credit union. It would be nice to have an option other than Bank of America.

People appreciate that Bank of America allows Brisbane a local option for deposits, mortgages, loans, etc.; however, the competition of a credit union would benefit our community.

        • parking permits

Start having parking permits for Brisbane residents, and limit the amount one house can have. I know of one house on Mendocino St. that owns six cars and parks all of them in the street. They have a garage and a driveway and don't use it. They leave the cars in the same spots for weeks sometimes and none of them are ever even ticketed. I would be happy to pay for a yearly permit if it means I can finally park on my own street.

          • A New Library in Central Brisbane

Our current library is heavily used but can not handle all the demands on it. We should build a new larger library that meets modern library standards. A new space could have a larger collection of materials, space for library sponsored events, a place for young people to gather and not disturb those that are looking for a quiet space, and much more.

The former 5 Star Cafe site, directly across the street from the current library, has been identified as the location for the new Brisbane Library. The City recently received $300,000 from the County’s Measure A funds to help cover building and design fees. This Thursday, 4/7, the City Council will be considering an Agreement for Professional Services for Design of the new Library. • Brisbane Maker Space

Maker Spaces are facilities which host tools and workshop space for the community. These spaces are an outgrowth of the larger Maker Movement - perhaps the best known aspect of which is the annual Maker Faire held annually in San Mateo (and across the nation).

What makes the Maker Movement important is that at its heart, it is a force for giving people the confidence and skills to create - whatever. It is the embodiment of "Do it Yourself" (DIY) or even better "Do it Together" (DIT) culture.

Makers make to learn, create, and have fun all for their own…

              • Create One-Way Streets to enable on street parking and clear sidewalks

Brisbane walkability would be increased significantly if the sidewalks were cleared of parked cars. By strategic conversion of certain streets or blocks to one-way traffic flow, you can narrow the driving surface (reducing from 2 lane to 1 lane width) and continue to allow emergency vehicle and local access while benefiting from moving parking from the sidewalk and into the street. This would not reduce the amount parking available. It would give us the ability to have a clear walking surface, options for plants and trees in the 'parking strip' and potentially increase property values due to the increased livability.…

                • Invite Off the Grid to come to Brisbane on Wednesday Nights

Invite Off the Grid http://offthegridsf.com/ to come and set up a Market place along the Park on Wednesday nights. I know many times mid week I don't feel like cooking, and this would be a good option to pick up some quick eats. It would also provide another opportunity to bring the community together - to dine out together. AND, perhaps one of these food truck entrepeneurs would find they like our community enough to open a brick and mortar store on Visitation

The building next to the Eagles Club, the old 5 Star Cafe site, has been identified as the location for the new Brisbane Library. • Vacant commercial tax (originally submitted by Ray on Civic Participation Project forum)

Berkeley has been considering a fee for owners of vacant commercial properties, with the idea of giving them an incentive to rent out to businesses rather than leave storefronts abandoned. This idea would help stimulate our downtown, as well as generate revenue for the city.

Previously Teen center used to exists, and now it's barren building, as we have revived SKate park, we should do the same for Teen Center. It will give forum to teens, to do interesting things like Drama, help out younger kids, could become place for doing after school activities. And on weekends, city can rent it out for hosting parties, kids birthday and get revenue out of that place, which is now like a Ghost house

One reason so few people know about our town is that nobody can find us. The northbound and southbound exits off CA 101 should be clearly marked for Brisbane, in addition to noting the Cow Palace.

                                  • Engaging youth in activities at Sierra point

The marina is somewhat underutilized. Redwood city has a great youth program and has some facilities for them. There is currently a youth sailing program in Brisbane-but they are constrained because they lack land based facilities.
Kayaking-sailing and rowing are wonderful activities. Oyster point has a small boat ramp also. Some kind of meeting place for community activities would also be good. There are new marinas planned for Candlestick pt. And they are including kayaking and small boat facilities.

Focus instead on remediating and developing the Baylands, this is where significant environmental restoration and economic development can occur, as taxes on Kinder and Recology demonstrate. Listen to SF businesses that want excellent public transport for their workers - the two rail lines serving the Baylands provide this. And the 200,000+ vehicles on 101 are a much bigger…

Converting to Underground Electric Service, would showcase our lovely hills and charming homes. And it would also be safer!

                                        • A vibrant Sierra Point

I would like to see Sierra Point developed into a vibrant waterfront, a source of pride and activities for residents of Brisbane. Perhaps we need an economic development director to bring in businesses? We need to reach out to companies and encourage them to create campus environments at Sierra Point. Then we can bring in restaurants, active recreation. We have a fantastic location, but it is underutilized and underdeveloped, looks unappealing. Let's make it a lively and lovely waterfront!
